Food writing crosses many genres and mediums.
It can be a recipe for Korean pancakes, a memory of a grandmother’s dish, an instructional book on healthy eating, or a magazine piece about the food markets of Mexico. It crosses into memoir, instruction, history, travel writing — just to name a few forms. In this introductory class, students will learn about the main kinds of food writing: cookbooks and recipe writing, food blogs, articles for magazines and websites, and writing for social media. We’ll also discuss how food bloggers and Instagrammers make an income, sometimes in the six figures.
